SUMMARY:Teaching the Film RADIOACTIVE: Marie Curie's Life and Legacy
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Join the Director of Radioactive\, Marjane Strapi\, the America
n Federation of \nTeachers\, Amazon Studios\, and Blueshift Education for
  a webinar on Amazon \nStudios' newest movie\, Radioactive. \n\n \n\n*T
 hursday\, August 6\n3:00-4:00 PM EDT\nFREE\nREGISTER [1]*\n\n \n\nRadioac
tive is a biopic full length film based on the life of Marie Curie. \nAwa
rded two Nobel Prizes\, the first in physics (1903) for the discovery of
\nthe phenomenon of radioactivity\, and the second in chemistry (1911) for
the \ndiscovery of the radioactive elements polonium and radium\, Marie
Curie \nremains one of the most formidable and accomplished scientists of
our time. \nHer body of scientific work birthed the idea of particle phy
sics\, changed our \nperception of matter and the universe\, and lead to
such monumental \ndevelopments from nuclear energy to treatments for canc
er.\n\nTo inform and inspire future generations of students\, Amazon Studi
os and \nBlueshift Education have developed three unique lessons for uppe
r middle and \nhigh school educators to incorporate Radioactive within th
e classroom. These \ninquiry based lessons can be incorporated into units
on the history of \nscience\, the history of women in science\, and the
process of scientific \ndiscovery. The lessons can also be a tool for str
engthening critical media \nliteracy using film and for thoughtful reflec
tion and connection to the \nlegacy of Marie Curie’s work today. Each l
esson includes curated short film \nclips\, primary and secondary source
material\, and inquiry based activities \nfor students to delve deep into
these lesson topics.\n\n/NOTE: /Radioactiv/e is a biopic of Marie Curie
 ’s life. A biopic is a \ndramatization of the real-life events of a p
erson’s life\, and the writer\, \ndirector\, and actors use artistic li
cense to interpret Marie Curie’s story \n- including the timeline\, eve
nts\, and characterizations of people represented \nin the film./\n\n \n
