As a leader in your union, the issues you will deal with most frequently concern your terms and conditions of employment.  Your members (and sometimes even administrators) will come to you with questions about the contract – often before opening the contract themselves.  Consequently, your familiarity with the contract will help you quickly respond to questions and concerns about the terms and conditions of employment for all your members.

The primary purpose of membership meetings is to conduct the business of the union. To a member, the measurement of democracy in the union is often based on what goes on at the union meeting. In this lesson, you will learn how to:

• run a results-oriented union meeting
• use parliamentary procedures
• engage membership
• improve union meetings
• and set the agenda

Officer elections must be conducted in accordance with the AFT constitution and the standards set out by the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act.  This lesson will guide you through the steps of conducting an officer election.

Union officers have a duty to manage the funds and property of the union solely for the benefit of the union and its members in accordance with the union’s constitution and bylaws. This lesson will cover the financial controls necessary to assure fiscal integrity.
