Informing Instruction: Student Learning Objectives

About this training

This course is designed to help you understand the potential power of student growth measures when implemented correctly as well as the challenges and ways they may be addressed. The process of creating student growth measures should be part of the instructional process. All teachers want to know where their students start, how they progress, and the results of the teaching and learning process.

We recognize that many of you do not use the terms Growth Measure (GM) or Student Learning Objective (SLO) in your evaluation process. Throughout this course we will use the terms interchangeably to talk about using formative assessment in your classroom every day to assist you in shifting your instruction for optimal student success.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Effectively communicate your evidence of student learning with all audiences
  • Explain the link between assessment and teaching and learning expectations
  • Write an authentic and meaningful growth measure for your class
  • Share with a colleague at least two ways this course improved your professional practice
  • Articulate the importance of teachers owning the process of linking their classroom assessment to teaching and learning

Before beginning this course, be sure to have student data available, as you will use it throughout the different activities and assignments.
