Summer Educator Academy 2020

PL Logo

Locals are typically gearing up now to send participants to the AFT’s signature Summer Educator Academy. But, given the times we are in, we recently canceled the face-to-face version of this year’s SEA. Since making this decision, the Professional Development team has been designing online versions of SEA sessions for members. We will be offering a series ranging from workshops to full courses starting with Session I:

Train the Trainer Courses

  • Strategies for Student Success: Rethinking Teaching and Learning
  • PSRP: Interacting with Students—Minimizing Unintended Consequences
  • Informing Instruction: Linking the Assessment Process to Teaching and Learning

Participant-Only Courses

  • Developing Math Problem-Solving Strategies with Bar Models
  • ELL 101—Special Virtual Edition—Planning for the Success of ELLs
  • Managing Student Behavior in School Communities for Paraprofessionals and School- Related Personnel (MBSC for PSRPs)
  • Reading Foundations: Strategies that Really Work! (This course is postponed)

Select your participants and register them to reserve their spot! Courses start as early as July 6.

Session II: See descriptions at the Course and Community Access link on the left navigation menu.

  • Accessible Literacy Framework (This course is postponed)
  • Managing Behavior in School Communities (This course is postponed)
  • Three-part series: Social Emotional Learning, Universal Design for Learning and Care
  • Union Solution to Student Trauma
  • Writing Strategies for K-5 (This course is postponed)

The costs for the virtual academy courses are per person, per course:

Mini-courses (participant only)

Strategies for Student Success (train-the-trainer course)

Informing Instruction: Linking the Assessment Process to Teaching and Learning

Note: A participant can attend more than one participant-only mini-course as long as the dates of each course do not overlap. If a participant registers for more than one course given on the same day, his or her registration for the class that starts the latest will be canceled.

Local leaders may register their participants, or participants can register themselves with prior approval from their leader. Payment must be submitted by local unions or districts. Payments from individual participants will not be accepted.
