AFT’s 2021 Center for School Improvement Leadership Institute, created in collaboration with the United Federation of Teachers Teacher Center and AFT national partners and local union affiliates, will focus on helping teams discover how to collaboratively create sustainable systems change—around the issues impacting their own schools’ students, educators and families—with a particular focus at this year’s institute on public education as a vehicle to social justice and democracy.
We have created a virtual structure that can work for your team! Rather than a few long, intense days, this year we will offer weekly live sessions, over the course of eight weeks. Teams will learn about the school-improvement elements of centering student identity and culture, forging deep relationships within communities of practice, using data to support collaboration, and fostering communications that value multiple perspectives to build an inclusive community—all with an eye toward social justice. Teams will have multiple opportunities to work among themselves, as well as connect with other teams from across the country, digging deeper into the issues that matter most to them, and together coming up with strategies to begin implementation back home.
The virtual institute will last eight weeks, starting with a kickoff plenary on Tuesday, Feb. 9. Thereafter, teams will meet every Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. EST through April 7. Although we will miss seeing you face to face, we are also excited to offer the CSI Leadership Institute in this new format, which does not require long travel days away from home!
